What is a Veteran?
A "Veteran"-whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve-is someone who at one point in his life wrote a blank check payable to "The United States Of America," for an amount "up to, and including his life." That is honor. And there are way too many people in this country today who do not understand that fact.
Haven's Heroes is one such program; we honor our military and their families every opportunity we get and hold firm in the belief that it only takes a small amount of time to say thank you. At Haven Hills, our heroes are thanked with equine therapies, up to and including carriage driving. Haven's Heroes was slated to be added to our program in June 2012; however, in light of our servicemen's and women's return from Iraq we believe there is no time like the present. Haven's Heroes is a wonderful program that provides equine assisted activities and therapies for veterans and active duty military with injuries and disabilities; This unique program will pair our heroes with other servicemen and women with similar experiences as the volunteers, leaders, and sidewalkers to increase trust and comraderie for our participating servicemen and women. We will be reaching out to other centers who have similar programs over the course of 2012 in the hopes of drumming up some competition for our heroes. Within two to three years time, Haven's Heroes will include a drill team, jumping team, and will hopefully start a show circut for participants.
